Improving The Way You Communicate With Patients

Communication is an all too important part of forging a healthy relationship between patient and doctor (or other healthcare staffer). You should consider this heavily if you want your patients to trust you or if you need to give them every assurance that you will work with them to the best of your ability.

Here at the BTC, we aim to help you with all aspects of running your facial aesthetics centre. In the discussion that follows, our team weighs in on what you can do to improve the way you communicate with your patients.

Tone Down Jargons

Before you start a discussion, remind yourself that you are not talking to a colleague. Simplify your explanations. This means cutting down on your use of medical jargons. Instead of initially saying that you are going to use botulinum toxin, use the generic term Botulinum Toxin. Explain the real meaning of the term afterwards.

Use Models

When explaining the facial anatomy or how a certain process affects it, do not just rely on your words. Use prompts to make understanding easier. You may use a diagram, a 3D model or an interactive model online.

Make Sure They Understand

Before proceeding to the next part of the discussion, see to it that the patient understands everything you have said. Ask them to do a recap and encourage them to ask questions if some things are not clear to them.

Be Casual if Necessary

Understand that your patient may be tense, especially if it is their first time to receive a Botulinum Toxin treatment. Keep them relaxed by initiating a light chat before proceeding to the real conversation. Acceptable topics include the weather and recent news (not the violent items). You may encourage them to talk about their family, but do not be too personal.

Most importantly, make sure that your tone is modulated and calm. Sometimes, it is not what you say but how you say it that dictates the quality of an interaction. Contact us today or browse through our other pages to learn more about how you can improve your facial aesthetics business.
